Overview

Russia requires a tourist visa for Indian nationals. Unlike most destinations, you need a tourist invitation (voucher) from an accredited Russian hotel or travel agency before applying. The Russian e-Visa system covers certain entry points and provides simpler access for shorter stays. Biometrics are taken at the consulate. Russia's visa process changed significantly after 2022 โ€” contact us for the most current requirements and available routes.

Do's

  • Obtain tourist voucher before applying โ€” without it, application is rejected
  • Ensure insurance covers Russia specifically (some policies exclude Russia)
  • Apply at least 4โ€“6 weeks before travel
  • Declare purpose of visit accurately as tourism
  • Carry registration card from every hotel โ€” Russian law requires registration within 7 days
  • Keep copies of all documents separately from originals

Don'ts

  • Don't apply without a valid tourist voucher and hotel confirmation
  • Don't buy travel insurance that excludes Russia territory
  • Don't overstay โ€” Russian immigration is strict and penalties are severe
  • Don't forget to register at hotels (handled automatically by hotels)
  • Don't photograph military installations, certain government buildings
  • Don't bring large amounts of undeclared cash

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is a Russian tourist voucher and where do I get it?

A tourist voucher is an official document confirming your hotel stay in Russia, issued by your accommodation. Explera coordinates this with our Russian hotel partners โ€” it's included in our Russia visa package.

Q.Can I use Russian e-Visa as an Indian?

Russia's electronic visa program was suspended in 2022. As of 2025, Indian nationals must apply through the traditional consulate process. We will advise you on the latest rules.

Q.Do I need to register with Russian police?

Hotels automatically register you with migration authorities. If staying at a private residence, your host must register you within 7 days of arrival at a local migration office.

Q.How much money should I have for a Russia trip?

Russia is relatively affordable compared to Western Europe. โ‚น3,000โ€“โ‚น5,000 per day (excluding accommodation) is typically sufficient. Show this equivalent in your bank statements.

Q.Is Russian accessible for English-speaking travelers?

Major cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg) have good English signage and tourist infrastructure. Outside these cities, Russian language skills or a guide are helpful.
